History

Named after the iconic Tortilis tree of the Serengeti, the Tortilis Camps are the result of over 30 years in the hospitality industry in Northern Tanzania. Family-owned and locally focused from the beginning, the organic growth is founded on a tremendous calling to provide opportunities for locals and specifically to women in challenging life circumstances.

Growing from an office in the busy streets of Arusha, the business now has a fully comprehensive headquarters to service and create everything: from our vehicles, to the local decorative fabrics of our tents, the engineering, metal works, carpentry and all aspects we proudly bring together to create the comfort of our Tortilis Camps. The satisfaction of all the infrastructure, planning and hard work we have put in over the years comes from your reviews and our accolades on Tripadvisor.

Awards

The self-regulated rating of the hospitality industry via Tripadvisor is such a powerful way to give honest, up-to-date, varied, and non-scripted feedback of guests experiences. This has become our go-to barometer on how to measure the success of our goals.

We are extremely proud of being rated the number one Camp in the Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara National Park & Ngorongoro Conservation Authority and constantly seeing such happy guests from all the incredible feedback on Tripadvisor.

Rooms

We call them tents, but, once you arrive at a Tortilis Camp, it’s immediately clear you are in for an accommodation treat. The substantial dedicated en-suite space includes a front room with a sofa and chairs for ultimate relaxation, a king-size bed plus a separate extra single bed segment, a bathroom with basin, flush toilet and hot water shower, and well thought out comforts to satiate every need.

Recently, all the Tortilis Camps have extended the accommodation offering to include larger family tents. The addition of bunk beds and extended bathroom in the family tent accommodates five with great comfort and space for all.

The areas around the tents are immaculately clean and perfect for spotting any nearby game. The exhilaration of being right in the middle of this wild bush will revitalize your senses with the smells, sounds and sites in and around the tent.

Location

The specially chosen locations for each of the Tortilis Camps contribute much to their charm. A lot of experience and location scouting went into the process, which resulted in perfect placed camps within the Northern Tanzanian National Parks.

Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp was specifically placed away from the cold and misty crater rim and sits instead under a magical tree canopy at the mouth of a valley.

Lake Manyara Tortilis Camp is just high enough on the slopes of the Great Rift Valley escarpment to have a perfect sunrise view over the flamingo filled lake.

Tarangire Tortilis Camp skirts vast open wetlands where elephants sail like ships through the sea.

Serengeti Tortilis Camp sits on a slope with regular game visits from the many buffaloe, lion, zebra, elephants, giraffe and antelope that spend so much time at the river just over 200m away.

Weather

All life in the bush revolves around the weather. Migrations follow the patterns of rain and vegetation growth, the big cats hunting is affected by the height of the grass, and watering holes for hippos and all those depending on them for hydration rise and fall through the seasons.

Tanzania falls just South of the equator and generally has good rains to sustain its rich environment of iconic vegetation and game. The Tortilis Camps booking operators are experienced and know all the different options and general conditions you can expect during your stay in the bush.

The rainy season is mostly in the months of March, April, and May and from then till November the climate is dryer.
