Tarangire Tortilis Camp

Tarangire Tortilis Camp

Just 120km from Arusha, our Tarangire Tortilis Camp is the perfect place for an introduction to the riches of Northern Tanzania.

This spacious camp, built in-between a line of 4 magnificent Baobab trees looks onto a vast expanse of wetlands. Elephants appear as ships sailing through the long grass watched from the warmth of our fire pit area while you enjoy a drink and watch the sunset.

The Tarangire River is a life-giving spine for this National Park and attracts herds of over 1000 elephants, tremendous numbers of giraffe, and flows all year round – teaming with life for you to enjoy on a game drive right on the riverbanks.

Walking tours with a National Parks ranger and your driver-guide is a tantalizing experience where you can encounter the largest elephants to the tiniest of insects. The ranger and guide will share deep insight into the details and sensations that are so unique to experience on foot. It’s incredible to think that such an exciting tented Tortilis Camp exists so close to Arusha, the perfect place to start or finish an itinerary of Tortilis Camp stays

Our Tortilis Tents

Our tents are always a surprise to our visitors who feel more like they are in a comfortable lodge than in a simple tent. We’ve put a lot of thought and creativity into the layout and interior design, as well as the decoration, materials, fabrics and items that each of our tents are created from. The result is a unique East African, spacious and comfortable space to feel welcome in for the duration of your Tortilis Experience.

Our tents are built to easily withstand the elements. Thick canvas protects against rain, and a system of adjustable tent flaps over mesh windows surround the tent. The tent flaps are easily adjusted to allow maximum airflow in the day. Our staff know just when to open and close the flaps and will do this for you to keep your tent in an optimal condition to the current weather conditions and time of day.

One of the reasons our tents are always in such good condition is because of our system of constant maintenance by our own staff. We build the tents from scratch in our own Tortilis Camps HQ in Arusha with staff skilled in joinery, metalworking, sewing, design and construction. This way we are able to keep the tent spaces constantly developing and functioning to meet our visitors needs for the most comfortable stay in Northern Tanzania. All of the Tortilis Camps work off the same blueprint, which contributes to the smooth running of the systems to make our tents a pleasure to stay in.

Locking Away Valuables

We have very few safety concerns at the Tortilis Camps due to implementing measures from our experience to prevent incidents. When you arrive you can lock away valuables in a box with a strong padlock provided in every tent. We’ve designed this for you to be able to lock away a whole bag, a large camera lens or other large items. You will then be able to keep the key for the padlock for your own use when needed.

Walking Around Camp

It is safe to walk around the camp during the day, however, it is an unfenced area so visitors need to still be vigilant. At night, we have escorts available constantly to walk you from your tent to the mess tent. Our Maasai staff carry out this function and are able to walk with you anytime you feel the need for some local assurance. All the paths are lit when it gets dark and each tent has a powerful torch for your own use.

Tent Security

Tents have two robust front flaps with large zips top to bottom. These zippers need to be shut, at least one during the day and both at night when not using the entrance to the tent. The flaps do not have and do not need locks, and staff will also make sure the flaps are kept zipped closed.

The Dry Season

Tanzania is very close to the equator so does not experience a real summer and winter. It does, however, experience a dry and wet season. The Dry Season is from June till October where there is not much rain and although it is winter the days are mostly clear, sunny and warm. It’s just at night when it can get colder so always pack light jackets and cardigans.

The Wet Season

The wet season has 3 parts to it. November and December are the short rains period which is just short sharp rains as a precursor to any substantial rains. January and February sometimes bring a gap in the rainy season. March, April and May are the wettest months known as the period of long rains when it rains most days making the vegetation is vibrantly green and lush.

We've Got You Covered

All our Tortilis Camps have umbrellas in the tent and our staff are contactable via radio (also supplied in every tent) so you always have the option for more cover should you need to leave your tent during a rainy moment. Our game drive vehicles have a retractable roof which not only provides the perfect game viewing platform but also allows you to regulate temperature by allowing more air in when hot and closing up when its cooler.

Power Supply

Solar-Generated Power

The full area of the Tortilis Camps is well lit at night, from your own tent, to the connecting pathways, to the mess tents themselves; the battery-powered solar energy is provided throughout the night. Our efficient system means you can flip a switch in your room, bathroom or front porch of your tent at any time for light just like that in a normal house.

Plugs and Charging

In Tanzania, we use type D and G sockets – just like in the UK. Each tent has outlets at the bedside tables, a special writing desk and in the bathroom. From here you can plug in USB, phone, laptop, tablets, electric razors or other devices for charging.

Wildlife

Thousands of elephant and giraffe are the most prolific game to enjoy in the Tarangire Tortilis Camp. The perennial river draws a lot of animals to its life-giving source and in the permanent swamps, 495 bird species can be seen – especially November to April when the migratory birds arrive.

On game drives, there are also lion, leopard, cheetah, warthog and hyena to spot, and on guided walks, the park rangers will point out both the micro-world of smaller animals as well as larger species, which is a thrill to experience on foot.

To get the most out of your sightings we have prepared these information sheets below with details of size, footprint, habitat, speed, weight, lifespan and the Swahili name to enjoy your safari even more

Tarangire Tortilis Camp - Activities

Each of our Tortilis Camps have been specifically located in an area which lends itself to experiencing more than just a game drive during your stay. A Tortilis Experience is about getting to see this rich part of East Africa from variable perspectives to get the best out of this diverse land. Wild game are the heroes, but there are also exquisite landscapes, dramatic viewpoints, intricate ecosystems, exciting walks, beautiful sensations to experience and iconic landmarks to visit.

The Baobabs of Tarangire National Park are thousands of years old and carry a mysterious power when you’re in their presence. Our Tortilis Camp is right amongst four Baobababs and you can visit a whole lot more with our guides. Guided walking safaris are extremely popular as is the river-road-loop where there is great birdlife. An outdoor bush lunch or dinner in a specially appointed area for privacy – staff take care of your every need. Later in the day a sunset drive to a lookout over a large Baobab dramatically silhouetted by the sun and an African bush fire with drinks at sunset. Large herds of elephant are often seen along with incredible numbers of giraffe.

WiFi

Yes, we have WiFi!

We know how important being connected to WiFi can be for some of our guests so we have made a big effort to install WiFi and to make it available to you at any time of the day. Whether it’s an important email you are sending/receiving, or staying in touch with family and loved ones, the connection is strong enough for most activities but does not support large streaming bandwidth from the internet.

Local Telecoms Networks

Although we supply WiFi, there is also connectivity to the telecoms networks in Tanzania. This means you can set your mobile phone to roaming and have the choice to make use of your own paid-for WiFi access from the Tanzanian data supplying networks. This is something we have no control of.

WiFi On The Move

Some of the game drive vehicles have a dongle to be able to provide WiFi services while on the game drive. This is generally not a very strong connection but if you need the WiFi option then just ask our driver guides for details.

How It Works

Just ask the staff for a piece of paper with the password on for your WiFi session. One session will last 24 hours whereupon you need simply ask staff for a fresh password. There are boosters outside the tents to enhance the WiFi signal for those a little further away from the router in the main mess tent.

Payment Method

Payment Methods:

We look forward to your visit and to make it official, we have two methods of payment for you to choose from. The easiest method is an online payment via credit card. You can also pay via a direct wire transfer. See below for all you need to know about either of these.

They are two type of payments

  • Online Credit Card
  • Direct Wire Transfers

Online Credit Card:

Paying with credit card is the fastest and most convenient way to pay. This Payment Method has a 3.5% bank surcharge that needs to be added on top of the original amount.

FAQ – Online Credit Card:

Credit card payment is the fastest method of making payments to us without going through many bank procedures. Once you make the payment, we immediately get an approval. This method assists us to confirm your reservations promptly. There is an additional bank charge of 3.5% as mentioned below. There are no other hidden costs.

Your credit card payment is completely secured. We use a link that is sent directly by the bank. The website is HTTPS, which stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. Also, we do not take credit card numbers from you, it needs to be filled up by you using the bank website directly.

The 3.5% charge is a bank charge. These charges are not applied by Tortilis but by the bank. In Tanzania, the banks charge supplement of 3.5% for paying by credit card.
Once you insert the details in the secured website, you will automatically see an approval on the website and online receipt which you need to print and save it for your records. Please send us the payment receipt on email so that we can confirm your booking immediately.

Once we receive your credit card approval, we shall send you a credit card authorization form that you need to fill for bank verification purposes only. In order to avoid fraud, the banks verify the forms that you have filled to confirm that you are the owner of the credit card. You would also require scanning your passport copy and sending it for bank verification.

The reason is so that the banks can verify that you are the true owner of the credit card and thus avoid frauds.

If your transaction fails, then you need to contact your bank to authorize the payments to Tanzania. Most of the time, banks put a caveat on transactions that they feel are fraudulent especially in countries like Tanzania. All you need to do is inform your bank regarding your transaction and you need to try again.

Direct Wire Transfers:

Below are all the bank details that you will require to transfer the funds to our account. When transferring the funds, please ensure that our final bank account name is mentioned in the transfer copy. Once we get the swift copy we shall send it to the bank to follow up. This mode of payment takes a minimum of 7 working days for the funds to arrive in our account.

Wildlife

Thousands of elephant and giraffe are the most prolific game to enjoy in the Lake Manyara Tortilis Camp.
