The Driver Guides who make the Tortilis Experience the Best of the Best

With 40 years of experience between them, you know you are getting a wealth of knowledge unavailable anywhere else. Let us introduce you to two of the Tortilis Camps most appreciated staff.

Lewis Hamilton of Serengeti

Lewis has been driving our game drive vehicles for 20 years! We like to tease him with the Lewis Hamilton mantle, not for his speed though, rather because he knows the bush and roads of Northern Tanzania like the many times over F1 Champion knows the track.

It’s so valuable having a driver who knows the area as in-depth as Lewis, and once you are in his care, he will not hold back on the details. Any questions you have, Lewis will almost certainly be able to quell your curiosity with his wisdom and experience.

Whether it’s the specific markings of the hippos in the Ngorogoro Crater watering holes, the broken tusk of an old isolated bull elephant that roams the area of our Tarangire Tortilis Camp, or the local name of the spices on the delicious meals served at our Tortilis Camps, Lewis adds tremendous value to any safari experience.

Mr January

Born on the 1st of January, his work colleagues sometimes call Festo, ‘January’. This gentle smiling character has been game driving for 19 years and his love seems to only intensify as time goes by.

At one point Festo was a park ranger for the Tanzanian National Parks Board. He learnt a lot through the training and experience there but soon returned to his real passion – driving our Landcruisers and sharing his love of the bush with our guests.

Festo is always extremely composed and calm. Below that quiet demeanor though is a burning passion for his environment and if you show interest in your safari, this proud man will relish the opportunity to go way beyond just pointing out the sites on the game drive. His knowledge of the bush is top-notch and his anecdotes will entertain you through long safari drives, around the fire in the evenings, and at dinner where you can enjoy a meal together.

Skills and Thrills

We feel extremely fortunate to be able to offer the skills and personalities like Lewis and Festo, along with those of our other 40 driver guides. It’s a special type of person that can make all the difference to your safari and we are super proud to be able to offer the best of the best.
